1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is designed to prepare young children for a brighter future by encouraging families to read together.  Reading to babies helps build bondsvocabulary, and habits.  According to one study, reading to children at age 4-5 every day has a significant positive effect on their reading skills and cognitive skills later in life.

This is an article from PBS that explains the benefits of reading aloud to kids.

It's easy to read 1,000 books before kindergarten

Start at age 2    Read one book a day

Start at age 3    Read ten books a week
Start at age 4    Read two books a day

Libraries can help!

You can find a wide range of stories to read to your kids at your local Washington County Library!  Bring them in and let them choose the book that you can then read together.  Make a trip to the library part of your weekly schedule.

Some libraries are offering this program with the ability to receive prizes for your child.  Please check with your local children's department for more information.
